MSN messenger isn't working for audio

Can someone help me sort this out?
Running WXP Home.
Yesterday I was receiving both video and audio just fine.
I didn't have either a mic or a camera, so couldn't send.
Today I installed a Logitech USB QuickCam, including both video and audio.
Then I was able to get and send video, but no audio either way, even though
the program said audio was active.
I 'deleted' the camera via Control Panel / cameras, and unplugged it.
Now I can't even connect for an audio session - the remote site gets a
message that my computer has a problem.

Shall I try uninstalling Messenger?

More info: connected via Router - one thread suggests this is a no-no, but I
was at least receiving audio and video before installing the Webcam.

First: The mic built into the camera does not work well. You need to
purchase a $15 Mic from Office Depot or such and plug it into the Sound Card
in the back of the computer.
