MSN Messenger 6.2 - Problems with ECHO

I've been using MSN Messenger for a couple of years now, and have turned many friends on to it.

All of a sudden, about a month ago, the same people I always talk to are complaining about an Echo that is so bad they can hardly talk.

It seemed to start just after we all did a "Windows Update". (After the Update I had no sound and had to fool around a bit to get it going again).

Has anyone else had trouble? Any Ideas?

There was a update to drivers that was flawed. Suggest that you do a
Restore to the day before you installed the update and see if that works.

I did try that, but it did not help. I would like to try deleting the update but I need a way to know on what dates I did updates. Is there a logfile somewhere?

No, but it was a Nvidia Video Driver update.

It was released on July 28, 2003 and it caused real problems with my video.
Had to restore to a earlier time. This may or may not be the same update, so
take it for what it is worth. You can always Restore if it causes problems.

Hi Joel.
Here's the 3rd, 4th, and 5th questions.

Did you get Windows Messenger to work with Zone Alarm,
simply by changing High to Medium on the Internet Zone on the Firewall Main
tab ? Do you run Windows Messenger logged in as Administrator or Limited
User ? Do you specifically open up a particular port for Windows Messenger,
using the Internet Zone on the Firewall Main tab ?

You already answered the 1st and 2nd question.
All 5 questions were posted together.

thanks again

I think you're right. That's what I seem to have found also; only I didn't download it till last month.
This would indicate that all the people whom I talk to on Headset with " Echo" problems is the result of a problem with MY computer.
Funnily enough; I went to the Nvidia site and they have a new download that just came out July 27/04! I didn't delete the old one - I assume the new one will overide it....

Answer to the 1st question below is YES.
I am the only user of this computer so I don't have any idea how I am logged
on.
Answer to last question is NO.
However, now I do not use Windows Messenger, it just is not allowed to Boot,
I can use it if I wish, but do not on a normal basis. I use MSN Messenger,
but there is no difference in how they behave in relation to Zone Alarm. I
do not use the latest version of Zone Alarm (version 5.0) My wife was bugged
to upgrade, which she did and it caused many many problems. So reverted
back.
