I have messenger disabled. I still see a process named msmsgs.exe running
on Task Manager using about 8 MB. Can anyone tell me what it is?

Greetings Jim,

That is Windows Messenger.

I definitely have messenger disabled in Services (Local) and, if fact, it
was disabled when I bought this computer in Decemeber and has never been
enabled. How can it still be running???

Oops, I should have posted this on XP.general.

Windows Messenger and the Messenger Service are not the same thing. You
have disabled the latter. Windows Messenger is an IM program and you will
probably see the chess piece icon in your notification area.

Thanks, Ken, now I see. Since I don't use IM I'd like to disable this
process and get my 8 MB back. But I cannot figure out how it gets started.
I cannot find it under the Startup Tab of System Configuration Utility
(from msconfig) and it is not in my Startup folder. I can't even find it
under Add/Remove Programs although I do see MSN Messenger there which I
don't use either.

How do I get rid of msmsgs.exe???

Typically you will see it in the startup tab, but you may already have
disabled it there. Other programs sometimes run messenger, the most obvious
being Outlook Express. There is an OE option to not run Messenger.

Keep an eye on it, does it run at startup or only after OE.

Jim,

Do you have NAV 2004? I do, and I learned the hard way (much hair
tearing) that if you enable IM protection for MSN / Windows Messenger
that msmsgs.exe restarts continuously.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

It is very strange. It is definitely not in startup tab and it is running
right after boot before I start anything. I just can't figure out what is
starting it.

Yes! That was it. I fixed NAV in options and restarted and it is gone.

Thanks a million.

Tnx a lot for helping me out here. But I would like to add that you need to disable IM scanning both in NAV and in MSN Messenger (under Options->File Transfer->Scan for viruses using: ccIMscan.exe) if it's hooked off to make this work

Keep your paranoia Chuck. ;-) And your hair.....
