MSCONFIG not working

When I attempt to open MSCONFIG via the run function the
MSCONFIG menu opens for just a few seconds and closes.
It wont give me an opportunity to manage MSCONFIG, the
menu window closes too quickly. I use XP home edition.
Any ideas to how I can correct this problem?. I posted
this question yesterday and from responding to some of
yesterdays question I have the following results,
1)only MSCONFIG and REGEDIT are effected
2)Norton 2003 did not locate a virus
3) I did find some .SCR files which I deleted but made no
difference (also deleted in REGEDIT)
4)Never found Wincfg.scr on my system
5)I can MSCONFIG/REGEDIT in safemode

Do a CHKDSK and see if that corrects any errors.

Usually it's caused by Klez or Yaha viruses. Users typically report that it
closes as soon as it opens. So test for the following;
