msconfig and task manager

I am working on a HP 1.2 gig Celeron with 128 megs of ram, using Win Home.
.. Recently it has been taking forever to boot up. It had Mcafee antivirus
program on it but i don't think they ever used it. I put in Norton Internet
Security and it found one virus in the prescan and it fixed it. (W32 Spybot
worm webdav.exe) I also ran Ad Aware 6.0 and removed 51 objects.
However it is still running very slow.
I tried to open "msconfig" from start/run and it may flash on the screen for
a second then it is gone. The hour glass is working for a few seconds then
it wuits and nothing comes up.
The task manager doesn't open either.
Any suggestions on what I should do?
Thanks Tom

Hi Tom,

You're probably still infected. Klez and other bugs can cause that behavior.
You need to update your Norton software and run a full system scan,
preferably from Safe mode.

After struggleing I finally got a newer version of Norton installed and the
nmew definitions downloaded. I scanned the system and found 197 infected
viruses. It couldn't fix any of them so it deleted them.
The system is faster than it was, but still seems slow. I do have msconfig
and task manager back working.
Thanks for your help, I am back up and running.

Tom, I just wanted to point out that 128 Megs of RAM really really
pushing the low limit for running XP, and XP will be slow on such a
system anyway. And you've added some programs they may even be taking
up more precious RAM at start-up. Your 1.2 GHz is plenty fast enough,
but you should add some more memory (RAM). Even adding another 128 MB
memory stick to get 256 is still pushing the lower limit, but better.
If you are on a budget but can add some memory, see if your computer
accepts odd sized sticks (your 128 & adding a 256 for a 384 MB total).
Some do & some don't. 512 is more like it to have.

Also I have read that Norton is an intensive program on it's own and
your low memory now might be making your virus-free computer run slow,
as you say it is still running slow.

Also, go here and follow this guys advice. You can disable a bunch of
XP stuff that is by default turned ON with Windows XP that you don't
need. Doing this will free up some of that memory you have so little
of.
