MS04-011 Critical Update - "File Corrupt"

I am trying to regroup from an attack by a browser hijacker (the
"Searchx" variant of CoolWebSearch. I need to install the
above-mentioned critical update to close a hole in the VM so I won't
get reinfected.

When I download the patch, (file name Windows2000-KB835732-x86-ENU)
and try to run it, it tries to install to my E: drive instead of my C:
drive as it should, and then gives me a message, "File Corrupt."

I've done numerous downloads and numerous installation attempts. I
have not had any problems with previous Windows updates.

Any advice would be appreciated.

First I would suggest on running a repair on your OS.
Sounds like your registry entries could be corrupt.
Try the repair and see if the update installs.
