MS AntiSpyware Update says "Can't Connect to the Internet"

I can use the Internet just fine, everything works except MS AntiSpyware.
When I try File>Check For Updates, it chugs for a while and comes back with a
red warning "Warning : Could Not Connect to the Internet"

When I open IE or Firefox, I can connect and do everything, so the issue is
*not* my Internet connection.

I looked in the Advanced Tools, Local Hosts file, didn't see anything that
looked like a Microsoft site.

I went to Microsoft.com and updated to latest beta version, thinking maybe
mine had expired. Rebooted, and still have the same problem.

Hmm, I don't have Norton running on that PC anymore, I use the CA AV software.

I just checked another PC on my home network with MSFT AS - same problem.
Maybe it is a problem at the MSFT end?

I have the same problem - using XP Home, ZoneAlarm (latest version), Avast 4.
Last update Dec 8th.

John - I believe you are right that this issue is outside the local networks
and machines--definitely Microsoft's responsibility, as far as I can spot
from the symptoms.

Right Guys, I am pretty sure you can just ride this one out, after all the
reading and trying to solve this error. I am pretty sure it is down to
Micsoroft Server, therfore give a few days till Microsoft come accross it and
it will fix it selft.

Same for me! All 3 PC's on my home network respond with the same error.
I've been tearing my hair out for a couple of days, "disceting" each PC and
then the router in turn! JaRgOn is right... wait it out.

I've had the same error for about 2 months now. I've tried everything noted
in this forum without success. I'm using XP SP2 with Mcafee Privacy Service
and Norton Antivirus. I've disabled all including the XP firewall without
success. All of the other computers on my network have the same
problem....????

I hope your right about Microsoft. This is a free Beta so, you get what you
pay for...!

DITTO. Suddenly I can't get updates. I will give it a few days then delete
and get something more reliable.

I do hope Microsoft recognizes the problem.

It isn't that kind of free product--it is not, in fact, free--it is an
additional benefit of the $ that you paid for your valid license for Windºws.

I have 7 computers in 3 different locations & all are having the same
problem:
"Can't Connect to the Internet"
I even called a friend of mine & he tried it at his place on his computers &
got the same message. Something must have happened up at Microsoft over the
weekend, otherwise everyone wouldn't be having the same problem.

I hope my posting will help let others know that it's not thier computers,
but a Microsoft problem on thier end.

I have the same problem, even after uninstalling and reinstalling the
software thru the internet connection that was "not there"! Everything else
works. I believe it's Microsoft server at fault, hold on for expected fix

Well there you go, My AS is all back up and running. it was after all a
weekend thing with Microsoft. They get there in the END. . . .

tell you guys a wierd thing. I got two PC, one running XP Professional in
Traditional Chinese version, and the other running XP Home in English
version. the one in English shows "can't connect to the internet", but the
one in Chinese version connected to the internet well. i tried several times,
and just can't figure out WHY?

If these machines are on the same internet connection, I'd start looking for
a cause on the specific failing machine. Software Firewall, proxy settings,
work offline, etc.

Hi all,

I have the same problem (MS AntiSpyware Update says "Can't Connect to the
Internet") but it only occurs when I turn on the TCP/IP filter in the network
connection properties. When I disable the TCP/IP filter, I can check for
updates without any problems.

I use Norton Interent Security and it does not affect MS Antispyware.

*******************************************************
When using the TCP/IP filter, you have to allow port 80 to use the internet.
MS antispyware must use another port to download updates and I can't seem to
find any info on what port it uses to update itself. I believe you are all
having a similiar porblem. You all must have some piece of software /
hardware that is blocking tcp connections other than port 80.
