more then 1 gateways in 2000

I notice there is an option to add more then 1 gate way..

how actually this works...
the machine will shift to 2nd when ?
1: when the 1st gate way cannot connect to internet.. but machine can ping
1st gate way
2: when the 1st gate way is down..and machine cannot ping it ?

I assume the 2nd option is correct .. am I right here ? or there is some
other scenario working here ?

it works same in 2000 ? .. the article was about NT 3.5

Yes. By default all newer OS's do not have issues.
