More SP2 Questions

E

E/B

This non-technical user sees a multitude of exchanges about SP2 and a
variety of positions about whether or not to take SP2, so I need the
concensus view:

- Should I enable the Auto Download capability or is it more prudent to
leave it Disabled and take SP2 at some other time?

- Can SP2 be downloaded while ZA free is running? Or should ZA be turned
off?

- My understanding is that 2 firewalls should not be active concurrently as
there is the possibility of conflicts. If that is correct how do I turn-off
the built-in SP2 firewall in favor of the ZA?

Feeling around in the dark and these are first-blush questions that have
come to mind. Look forward to assistance which will be appreciated.

You will a dozen different answers to that. It is your decision.
Some people have had good results, some terrible. Back up your
data if you do decide to install now.
Can SP2 be downloaded while ZA free is running? Or should ZA be turned
off?

Yes it can. And, since SP2 can take some time to download, especially if
you are using automatic updates, you should not disable your firewall.
You will be leaving yourself open for intrusion.
My understanding is that 2 firewalls should not be active concurrently as
there is the possibility of conflicts. If that is correct how do I turn-off
the built-in SP2 firewall in favor of the ZA?

You should not have both running at the same time. Additionally, Windows
Firewall only protects you from incoming threats. ZA protects against incoming
and outgoing. Stick with ZA if it is working for you now.
Once SP2 is installed, go to Control Panel. There will be a new group called Windows
Security Center where you can turn off the firewall and make other changes to
the new security settings.

If you have dial-up then get it thru windows update or auto updates.
If you have broadband, then get the full version from ms website.

turned off?

Leave ZA on at all times.

ZA?

Yes, just run one firewall.
Once sp2 is installed goto control panel, firewall, to turn xp's firewall
off.

Good Luck! I need a consensus view of the Presidential Election.

I'd download it and install it myself. Auto Update just adds another layer
of BS that can go wrong.
- Can SP2 be downloaded while ZA free is running?
Yes.

Or should ZA be
turned off?

Only when it is being installed

One software firewall is sufficient, and 2 just becaomes a hassle for things
like online gaming.
If that is
correct how do I turn-off the built-in SP2 firewall in favor of the
ZA?

Go for it now.

Leave ZA running. After the AU is complete you'll have to approve the
actual SP2 install. Before ok-ing that uninstall ZA and disable virus
checker.

Do the opposite and uninstall ZA.

Thanks to all for their assistance. Confidence level of this old man has

I would order a free CD, just become available - order at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
- Can SP2 be downloaded while ZA free is running? Or should ZA be turned

While it *can* I would turn on the old version Windows firewall and have
all these third party items out of service for the duration

It has a nice new icon of its own in Control Panel

We have been putting together some items of guidance to which several
experienced MVPs have contributed - see Installing SP2:

Thanks Alex. Much easier to get there through Control Panel.

Re-reading the varied responses and now have another question for Phil: you
advise taking SP2 from the MS website (I have broadband) but did not
identify which. WinUpdate now is not available for use unless AutoUpdate is
activated.

Want to download other than using Auto, but where do I find the SP2 "patch"?

Sorry to be dense but seem to be on a circular path.

Saw that, and read the MS directions about who should be using the site.
Since I have just this one personal computer and certainly am not an IT Pro
or Developer is there anything peculiar there that could cause me a problem?

No, that message is mis-leading. It is the exact same sp2 as you'd get from
windows update. It's only that it's a bigger download and a stand alone
install version. Used so you can update more than one computer, but only
have to download the install file once. You can download the install file
and then put it on a cd and after a format you can load it from the cd
instead of downloading it again off windows update. I have only used this
version on over 20 single and/or network machines and it works fine. They
only put that message because they want normal single users to get it from
auto-updates or windows update so as not to slam the server that the IT
version is on. Since ms wants it to be 100% available for business IT guys
to deploy on their network. If you have broadband then get the IT install
version, if you have dial-up, then windows update is a better bet.

MS is on a behavior modification propaganda campaign to get home users to
turn on Auto Update. Totally bogus information.

Why Uninstall zone alarm?
Zone alarm does better at it, then the windows xp sp2 firewall.
However, they did mess up one version. Which was corrected.

Thanks, Kurt. A few days ago I accessed Update, was prompted to "update the
Windows Update", did and now cannot access Update without turning on Auto
(at least for the time I want to check for Criticals).
Can the update be undone so I return to the "old" Update instead of playing
games each visit?

BTW I took and saved the 'full version" SP2 (about 12 minutes or so by
broadband). More good reports (they seem to be multiplying) and even I might
try to install. Thanks all
