Monitor problem with XP Service Pack 2

Hi,

First post here, and I hope that I'm not overlooking the simple solution to
my problems...

I have recently installed updated from XP Service Pack 1 to Service Pack 2,
and am experiencing a frustrating fault, seemingly with my graphics adapter.
The fault experienced is a frequent freezing of the screen, followed by the
power to the screen being momentarily switched off then on again. There is
some additional display problems, such as the minimise/maximise and close
tabs in the top right corner of open windows being covered with seemingly
random noise graphics.

I am running a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 with 512MB of RAM. Before my installation
I performed a thorough virus and adware sweep using Norton Internet Security
and SpyBot. Additionally, I performed a complete disk defragment, including
the system sector. The video card I am using is an NVIDIA GeForce4 MX420,
and I downloaded and installed the latest driver. Just to be certain the
mistake wasn't a simple conflict issue, I also contacted LeadTek to obtain
the latest BIOS for my motherboard When I tried to install this, the Setup
program informed me that my BIOS was up to date and did not need to be
reinstalled.

I have installed and, following a recurrence of this same monitor fault,
have uninstalled/reinstalled Service Pack 2 only to have no luck fixing this
problem. The factor causing the fault here seems to me to be SP2, and though
my computer is doing fine using SP1, it would seem that Microsoft had a
reason for releasing SP2, so I think it's best I install it at some point -
but only when I can resolve this problem.

PLEASE help me. Thanks.
