monitor goes black

A friend of mnine is running Win2000 and the screen is turning back in the
middle of everything. She has to restart the machine in order to get the
display to return to normal. It does not seem like the monitor is the
problem and has not installed anythign recently.

The driver seems to be up to date and has checked for spy ware and adware
to. It is very annoying as she keeps needing to restart.

Can anyone help with this issue?

Either the monitor is failing (unlikely as they usually go dim before
actually dying) or the graphics card is dying.

Check cables (naturally, should always be the first thing) but if it looks
like the cables are all fine, there are so many different things it could
actually be, it's almost impossible to diagnose online.

Could be:

Power Supply Unit
Graphics Card
Motherboard
Monitor
Any Variety of Cable

If you have a spare graphics card that will fit in her motherboard, then you
could try that and take your monitor round to her place and try that as
well, but if you don't or there is no change, then it's time to think about
a new PC.. it's 5 years old if it came with Windows 2000 and the average
life of a PC is 2 years. At that stage, it's not worth replacing just the
motherboard because you'll probably also have to replace the CPU, graphics
card, PSU, etc etc etc.
