Modem - no dial tone

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron with an Actiontec internal modem. I now receive a 'No Dial Tone' error when attempting to connect to my ISP (AOL). No settings were changed or updated prior to this and I have gone through the windows troubleshooter and both AOL's and Dell's call centres - to no avail. The modem diagnostics say it is working properly so I am fairly frustrated. I would appreciate any assistance and advice on this matter.

Is it plugged in? There are 2 RJ11 jacks on your modem, are you in the
right one?

also, test with a phone that the line is working. yes, know this is
obvious, but often the easiest things are the fault.

Plug a phone into the modem and see if you can hear dial tone - if not
you have a line problem

Remove all other devices from the phone line - maybe you have too many
devices or one is creating interference.

Some Telco message banks use a different dial tone when messages are
waiting - this is not recognised by some modems and the only way to
connect is to clear the messages.

I will start with an apology - I should have put more detail in my first effort. The modem and computer have been fine for two years and nothing (that I know about) has been changed. The line checks out OK as well. I removed and reseated the mini pci card and reinstalled it again with no success. I have also tried a PCMCIA modem card which when installed correctly gave 'no dial tone' as well. In my limited knowledge this leads me to point the finger at software issues. In desparation I also tried another ISP to discount any problems with AOL but with no joy. Many thanks for the responses and I hope someone can put me out of my frustrating misery

I have the same problem - is there an answer?

It's happened to 2 laptops co-incident with our return to the UK from Aus - but my old desktop still works on the phone line. The internal modem, a PCMCIA modem and a new USB modem all fail to detect a dialtone: A mobile phone modem via the infrared port does work, allways, on the second and subsequent attempts.

Cheers,

modem drivers include country-specific settings; I suspect that is your
issue. Reinstall the drivers, being sure they're correct for the UK.
