once i disconnect from internet session i have to
uninstall modem driver and restart computer to get it to a
condition in which it will connect once again. have
changed PCI ports and reloaded windows xp home. no
success. modem tones start screaching. thanks.

A friend of mine had similar problem.
It was fixed by unplugging the modem, then start Win and remove the modem
entry in the device manager.
Then, shutdown, and plug in the modem again.
