Modem Driver Problem

Hi Hoping someone can help. Am asking this question on behalf of my
son. His ISP suxs when it comes to newsgroups.
He has just installed win 2000 after reformatting from win98. He has
a Netcom 56k modem, with I believe a Lucent chip set, so he tells
me,anyway. He installs using the latest drivers downloaded from the
relevant site. Able to connect to Net and all appears ok. After
shutting down the computer and restarting, win2000 will automatically
load the default lucent modem driver, overriding his latest driver.
In doing so, he is then unable to connect to the Net. So he has to
uninstall the default driver and then reinstall the latest driver. So
each time he restarts the computer he is faced with the same problem.
How does one override the default driver and "permanently" install
the latest. Thanks for anyones help on this issue.

I don't know how to disable that, other than disabling Plug-n-Play in the
BIOS, but I do have a suggestion. Leave the standard modem driver and use
Control Panel to Add New Hardware. Manually add the latest Lucent Modem
Drivers, and simply select that modem when configuring his dial-up
connectoids.

I've had similar problems with modems before, especially DSP only modems,
but even with my external 3Com Courier V.Everything. I hope this helps.

Thanks for that, I will pass it on to my son. If there are any other
suggestions, I am open to them. Thanks
