MMC/Windows Search (and possibly others) won't run

Hi All,

Got a really wierd one here. I've got a laptop running XP Pro SP2 and it
won't run any MMC or the Windows Search (Windows+F)

If I try and open any MMC I get the "MMC cannot open the file...." error

If I try and open the search system I get the "A file that is required to
run search cannot be found..."

I've found several acticles in the KB related to both problems but none of
them have been able to solve the issues and I have a gut feeling the problems
are related. There was some spyware on the machine at one time (commet
cursors) but the machine scans clean now.

Any thoughts?

Scott,

%windir% = C:\WINDOWS if Windows is installed on the C: drive. I have no
idea about your machine. Paste %windir% into Start | Run click OK and see
what opens.

Try this.
1. Go to C:\Windows\srchasst\ or %windir%\srchasst\ and delete everything
that you can.
2. Start | Run | Paste this in the box and click OK...

regsvr32 /u %windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

You will see a message like this if successful...
---------------------------
RegSvr32
---------------------------
DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\srchui.dll succeeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

3. Go to C:\Windows\Inf\ or %windir%\Inf\ right click srchasst.inf and
click install.
