Missing or corrupted file during win2k pro setup

Guest

Well, I found my missing disk. But it doesnt work. I receive an error
message as follows:
The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing:
Value 0 on line in section [SourceDisksFiles] with key “sp4.cab.â€
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup press F3.

Can anyone tell me what the correct value should be in this line? Or
provide me any assistance with this problem?

How are you installing? To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000
install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

I had many viruses on this puter. My son had been using this laptop and
downloaded all kinds of crap. I did an overwrite using the hard drive
manufactures software so that I could start with a compltely blank drive.

I then attemted to install win200 using boot disks created as you suggested,
and the win2000 disk. It goes through the checking partions and format (set
full partion and ntsf format), then goes to inspect setup. This is where it
hangs and I get the error message.

If you can't boot the CD-Rom then try recreating the setup disks.

The wincd is bootable, though you may have to amend bios to boot from cd.
Did you delete partitions? as per DP post
If you didnt then your hd is not clean/blank. There is no need to use hd
manu.utility

First, let me appoligize for the duplicate post. I didnt see the first one
listed, so I though it had gotten dumped somehow.

Second, I have realized that I have not included all the information for
this problem. The cd that I found is my back up copy of win2k. Years ago I
made a duplicate copy of the disk for back up purposes. I have the cd-key
(on the bottom of the laptop). The disk for some reason is not bootable, so
I created the boot disks using the utility within the win2k cd. After I used
my HD manufactures software to clean the disk, I loaded up the boot disks and
when it came up and asked if I wanted to install windows 2k, I said yes. It
asked me if I wanted to partion the drive, I set partion as the whole drive.
It then asked if I wanted to format. I chose ntsf. After it did the format
it started to load the software. The first thing it did was a scan. That is
when I recieved the error. I will attempt to use delpart from the recovery
console to remove and recreate the partion. I will also remake the boot
disks.

Any other suggestions will be apprecaited..
Thank You.

That's not necessary. Windows setup is capable of deleting/ recreating
partitions.

Use makeboot.exe from dos or makebt32.exe from any 32 bit OS (win9x or
greater)

| When making the bootdisks, should I use MakeBoot.exe or MakeBt32.exe?

I made the boot disks using my winxp box. I used the makebt32.exe to do
this. I will follow your earlier instructions about deleteing the partion,
then abort the install and restart using the boot disks and recreate the
partion.

Thanks for all the help

Well... I give up. I have done everything that has been suggested and
nothing works. The only thing I can conclude is that my disk is corrupted
and I will have to get a new copy. I am still getting the same error that I
first posted. If anyone has any other suggestions, I am open to them.

Thanks for all your help

Your CD-Rom is probably a slip streamed install. Try replacing the file
txtsetup.sif on the first floppy with the file (same name) found in \i386
directory on your CD-Rom.

Well... this is truly the night of miricles. Dave, your solution worked and
the program loaded fine. After I got it loaded. Was looking for some other
software and found the original win2k disk! Well I will be putting that
somewhere safe (and probably loose it again.. lol.) Anyway, Thank you for
all your assistance. I dont know why I didnt think of copying over that file
myself. I looked at it and compared the one on the cd to the one on the
floppy disk, but never considered overwriting the one on the floppy.

Thanks again and have a very Merry Christmas!
