Missing NTLDR

D

Damien

I am getting a message on my laptop that reads NTLDR is missing. I do the
following on a laptop:
1.. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2.. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3.. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4.. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and
pressing enter.
5.. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that
password.
6.. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard
disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive
letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.
7..
I then try the following.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

But I get a message that tells me access denied. How do I get these files
onto my laptop?

You will have to do a 'repair' install:
1.. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2.. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3.. Select 'Install Windows XP' (not 'R', just enter)
4.. Accept the EULA
5.. Select Repair a damaged.... 'R'

This will solve your problem.

Wile in the recovery console...

Assuming that the DIR command shows some files and folders run CHKDSK /F
once, to fix any file system problem there may be.

Once that is done type FIXBOOT C: (assuming C: is the drive with Windows).

Fingers crossed Windows will boot again after restarting the PC

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Hello, Do you mean CHKDSK /R ? I my XP Pro doesnt have the /F switch.
My apologies, it's CHKDSK /P while logged into the recovery console (/P
forces Windows to check the drive, even when it has not been flagged as
bad).

CHKDSK /P /R does a BLOCK test of the drive, do this if you suspect your
drive to have a physical fault (ie: it was making some strange noises at
one point or the other).

Still the same error? You did check the boot priority in the bios, right? :(

Bad bad...lemme start VMware and have a quick spin at it myself.
