Missing Icons

Just had a complaint from the wife whose on PC downstairs while I'm on one
upstairs.

The PC downstairs has 3 accounts. One for myself, and one each for wife and
daughter. I probably use the PC once a every month to 6 weeks to take mirror
image of drive for backup (have installed caddied hard drives).

Before I do this, I log into my account, run ad/spyware cleaners, wash
system (webroot window washer) and check whether requires defrag. I also
ensure other account users run cleaners as well.

One thing I do do is remove unwanted icons, generally games icons (wife and
daughter into these in big way) by just moving them into an "Unused Desktop
icons" folder I created on my desktop.

However, apparantly when I do this, my wife and/or daughter lose the icon on
their respective desktops !!??

Question is, why does this happen ? I thought having different desktops
meant each could have tailored to own requirements. Why removing icon on one
causes it to be removed from others ?. Can this be prevented??? I don't
want my own desktop cluttered with these icons - nor do I want them be put
there in the first place.

Help appreciated.

It depends where the icons are located. There two locations of importance:

a) In your own profile folder. These icons can be seen by you only.
b) In the "All Users" profile folder. These icons can be seen by every user.

If you remove icons from group b) then they will no longer be seen by
your wife and your daughter.

Right-click the icons, click Properties, then General, to see where they
are located.

Pegasus,

** I hope this is not another duplicate post as having replied when posting
page couldn't be displayed and returned to your message with my reply non
existant. Here goes again......I take it therefore that unless otherwise
given the option, the game(s) will be installed in desktop folder of the "All
Users" profile - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop ??

I take it that I could access this profile/folder and move icon(s) to the
more appropriate folde; either wife or daughter ??? What if, as is the case,
accounts are password protected ???

Regards

Yes, All Users is usually where a program will place icons, unless
specifically asking for the individual profile. You could create the
Unused Desktop icons folder in the All Users Desktop folder, then
everyone would see them. You could also put them in the appropriate
Desktop folders. If you have Administrator rights, you should be able
to access the folders in Explorer.

Good installation programs ask you where to place their
icons. Medium quality ones put them into "All Users" without
asking. Bad quality programs put them into your own profile
folder without asking.

For the remainder of your question, see Terry's reply.
