Icons do not show alpha correctly

Hello! When my wife logs into her account, her desktop shows all icons
without the correct alpha (all icons have an ugly solid color behind all text
and in all places where icon pixels should be transparent). It really looks
ugly, and I cannot find anything to correct it. Any ideas where to change
this? Must be a user setting somewhere, since it doesn't affect other users
(as a video driver or display setting would, as those are universal across
all user accounts). I almost have her converted from Mac to the PC; this
makes the PC look less appealing for her... ;-) Any ideas to check or try
are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

1. Right-click on the Desktop and point to "Arrange Icons By" and uncheck
"Lock Web Items on Desktop".
2. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties
3. Click Advanced tab and click "Settings" button under "Performance".
4. Make a check mark on "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop."

Hope this help, let us know!

Thank you!

Those were very good ideas, but unfortunately this didn't alleviate the
problem. It did bring me to the ui Performance Options (which I couldn't
find before) so I tried resetting her visual effects to each of the presets.
The changes went through, but at no time did they correct the alpha problem.

Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects - check
"use drop shadows for icon labels".

2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be cleared.

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won't work. To
check for web content: Display Properties>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web -
make sure all checkboxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be an image file, not html.

Thank you so much! The missing clue was Customize Desktop > Desktop Items >
Web tab, where several web pages were listed to provide desktop web content.
I cleared that info (doubt my wife will even miss it) and Shazam!, all is
right with the world. Or at least her desktop.

To you and to RajKohli who advised me previously, a gazillion thanks for
helping me with this!
