Minimized application disappear

I have two issues with XP SP1.
- Minimized applications do not go to taskbar,
rather it disappears. I need to use task manager
to bring it back to the desktop. It doesn't matter
which application that was minimized
- If I deselect all items including language bar, address,
quick launch bar, etc,. from the view list of the taskbar,
then taskbar basically disappears. I have to select
at least one of them to revoke the taskbar on the
desktop screen

Can someone help on this?
