How to display taskbar buttons?

When I open / launch a program on Win XP, there should be a taskbar button
shown on the taskbar. Unfortunately since last week, no taskbar buttons are
shown. The taskbar only display the Start, Quick Launch, Language Bar and
clock etc. Therefore I do not know how many programs have been opened if
they are minimized.

My question is how to redisplay the program taskbar buttons?
