Microsoft Security Essentials

Was thinking about trying this SW. Would like user input:

* does it constantly run (monitoring network traffic etc)?
* does it consume CPU to slow down system (e.g. Norton)?
* is it STABLE?
* does it 'phone home' without your permission?

Any other pro's, con's?

Lastly, I also use Windows 2000. Any AV recommendations for it?

It is not reliable.

Windows 2000? Ask in the proper newsgroup, not windows XP. Or, if you've
ever heard of Google....

It is much better than Norton and is one of the better free anti-virus
programs. Yes, it's stable and it doesn't phone home.

Here's my standard recommendation:

For an anti-virus program, I recommend eSet NOD32, if you are willing
to pay for it. If you want a free anti-virus, I recommend one of the
following three:

Avira
Avast
Microsoft Security Essentials

You also need anti-spyware software. I recommend that you download and
install (both freeware) MalwareBytes AntiMalware *and*
SuperAntiSpyware.

*** Yes.
* does it consume CPU to slow down system (e.g. Norton)?
*** Not noticeably.

*** Yes.
* does it 'phone home' without your permission?
*** Not as far as I know.

I have used MSE on about 20 machines since December 2009 without any
problem. It runs quietly in the background and it just takes care of itself.
With other virus scanners I had several minor or major problems, e.g. the
scanner putting system files into quarantine, or deleting utility files, or
persistently nagging users one month prior to the licence expiring.
Lastly, I also use Windows 2000. Any AV recommendations for it?
Since Windows 2000 is no longer supported, you'll have to find out which
scanner will still run under that OS.

Hello 'none'
As Ken has said -

I had free Avast on an Acer laptop[XP SP3 PRO] - not a very powerful one at
that and I found it a bit cumbersome and resource hogging - but then not as
bad as others.
So I put MSE on[already running on my desktop - XP SP3] and so far one would
hardly notice it - full scan 40-45 minutes is most acceptable for me.
It does sort of phone home to dll updates.

With the other two MBAM and SAS again all free and highly recommended by
Ken's colleagues, one needs nothing more for basic security.

Bad mistake going back to AVG. Disk access no more frequent. Suggest you
reinstall and monitor reason for disk access.

Looks like you're out-of-luck with Win2k. Here's a quote from the MS website:

\quote
Minimum system requirements for Microsoft Security Essentials

Operating System: Genuine Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3); Windows
Vista (Gold, Service Pack 1, or Service Pack 2); Windows 7
\end quote

Might try Avast...I just installed it on an old Winbook laptop with only 128mb
ram. Runs great. Had a heck of a time getting AVG out of the system first.

Good luck.

huh? AVG is preferred by many of us, not a "big mistake".

Compared to MSE, AVG is trash.

I tried to d/l MSE and got message "NOT AVAILABLE IN YOUR
COUNTRY."

I'm in South Africa.

Can anyone tell me why this is so.

Thanks
