Microsoft Photo Editor

Re: previous question as attached below, the solution seems to reset the
default image editor to Microsoft Picture It! 7 instead of Microsoft Photo
Editor, as requested. Is there a solution to specifically assigning Microsoft
Photo Editor as the default image editor?
Hi. I just updated with SP2, and now when I go to view
my photos in "My Pictures," when I click on the button on
the bottom of the window that says "Close this and open
this picture for editing," it opens up Paint. It used to
open the photos up for editing with Microsoft Photo
Editor, which I prefer. Please let me know how to get
this fixed, so that when I click "close and edit" it will
open up Microsoft Photo Editor.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks.

How to open your choice of image editors when
clicking the Edit button on the Windows Picture
and Fax Viewer screen.

IMPORTANT: This message contains information
about modifying the registry. Before you modify the
registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that
you understand how to restore the registry if a problem
occurs. For information about how to back up, restore,
and edit the registry, click the following link to view the

===========================================

OK...go to...Start / Run and type in..."regedit" without
the quotes. Then click...OK...or press...Enter.

In the Registry Editor...drill down to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

In the Data column you should see:

"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

(where you see *mspaint* in the example....you will
see your current default)

Replace the key with the path to the program that will
be your default image editor. I wanted Picture It! 7 so
the following is what I changed to.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Picture It! 7\pip.exe" "%1"

Now, my images still open in the Picture and Fax viewer
but if I left click the Edit button...Picture It! 7 opens.

To replace the string...

Left click "default" to select it.

Go to...Edit / Modify...

In the "Edit String" field...

Copy/Paste the path to your program choice:

"C:\Program Files\??????????\???.exe" "%1"

Left click...OK.

Now, your images still open in the Picture and Fax
Viewer but if you left click the Edit button...your image
editing program opens..

Good luck.

Go to Start | Run | Type regedit

In the Registry Editor find this key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

Click on this value
"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"
Replace the value with the directory of your program such as the following
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Photoshop.exe" "%1"
To use Photo Editor as default use the directory of Photo Editor

When you click the edit button your images should open in the program you
have chosen.

You can also try the following if the above doesn't work for you

In Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | File Types Tab select the
image extension click on Advance | New then in the Action box type "Edit
With Program Name" then click browse select program Click OK

When you right click that file type "Edit With Program Name" appears in the
contextual menu select and file opens in the program you chose.

In the Edit File Type Dialog click New in the action box type "Preview" and
in the Application used to perform Action enter the following "rundll32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1" this will open
images in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer when you Right Click and choose
Preview.

Picture It! 7 is simply an example. If you insert
the *correct path* to the executable (xxxxx.exe)
of Microsoft Photo Editor in the indicated
registry key it will become the default editor.

Is there not a way for novices like me who do not like playing with the
registry?
I've tried removing and reinstalling photo editor from office XP and also
office detect and repair in the hope that it may have set it back to the
original settings. Needless to say it still opens Paint. Why do MS have to
keep assuming they know best!

MS Paint is the WinXP default image editor...
aside from editing the registry there is no way
I'm aware of to change that.

The following doesn't change the default image editor you get when you click
the edit option in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer but it provides the same
functionality that you access by right clicking an image and choose a edit
command you can add to the Right Click Contextual menu this is requires no
registry editing.

In Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | File Types Tab select the
image extension click on Advance | New then in the Action box type "Edit
With Program Name" then click browse select program Click OK

When you right click that file type "Edit With Program Name" appears in the

Hi I have the same situation . Only I have PHOTO EDITOR as the default pic
VIEWER now instead of the MS PIC AND FAX VIEWER with the MS PHOTO EDITOR as
the default editor when I click the icon . I prefer that combo .
When I tried to follow the regedit instructions from John Inzer , when I
went in the reg I could only get the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. There was no string
for \systemFileassociations in my reg ( see below )
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

hElP !!

==================================
Your message is not clear to me...what is the
exact combination you are shooting for?

I'm thinking you did not scroll down far enough
after you opened HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
It goes through the alphabet twice......it's a
loooong way down to SystemFileAssociations

=============================
To set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
as your image viewer...change your file
associations.

Right click a .jpg file and from the menu...
choose...Properties / General tab / Change
button...Select...Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer / OK / Apply / OK.

For the Editor, you'll have to edit the registry
as previously discussed.

By default Photo Editor is install into this directory C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE
I found this will not work in the registry edit.

Solution: Create a folder in the C:\Program Files directory then Copy the
PhotoEd folder to the folder you created then use that directory in the
registry edit. (deleting or moving the original is not recommend) Ex:
C:\Program Files\PhotoEditor\PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE

Using the example in the registry edit.

Go to Start | Run | Type regedit

In the Registry Editor find this key

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

Click on this value
"%systemroot%\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1"
Replace the value with the directory of your program such as the following
"C:\Program Files\PhotoEditor\PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE" "%1"

When you click the edit button in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer your images
should open in the Photoeditor.

This provided as is with no guarantees it will work on your system

When you open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT do you
not see a list similar to the following screenshot?
See how it goes to ZM9 and starts over at A3D?
SystemFileAssociations is waaaaay below.

http://tinyurl.com/5xwa3

I am running Win XP Home but I don't know if that
would be the reason for major differences in the
registry.

Paul Ballou discovered a way to set MS PHOTO
EDITOR as the default..be sure to read his last
message.

yes , I do have a list similare to your screenshot , its ends at Z and
starts over yes. I didnt realize you were counting the file .ext's as
possible strigngs. Then I do have that only not that string with SystemFile
Associations. Incidentally , Paul's idea calls for me to have that same key
in under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Now since I have professional and you guys both
have the HOME Edition , Im stuck for sure . Any sugestions ? These seems to
be a pretty common error with SP2 , any chance MS would put a patch out ?

Honestly, I don't think a patch is required...not
quite yet anyway...

Try the following alternative and see if you can
find it in WinXP Pro registry:

ANOTHER VERSION:
(This value should be the same as the previous one)

Try the previous instructions with the following key.....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\
SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

Joe,
You have an email but for others that may have diffculty finding the key
provided it does exsist open the registry editor then go to the Edit Menu
select Find enter this key into the box
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command
Click Find Next then when it finishes searching you find the correct key.

I believe the Key would exsist on Windows XP Pro since you have Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer this is part of the program.
