How can I get a copy of Microsoft Photo Editor on Windows XP like I had when
I used Windows 98?

Install MS Office. Office 97, Office 2000 and Office XP all use the SAME version of this
utility.
However it is a poor utility to begin with. Paint Shop Pro, Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe
PhotoShop Elements are much better programs.

IIRC, it was part of Office (pre Office2003) - not part of the OS.

Install a copy of Microsoft Office. Microsoft's Photo Editior is one
of the tools included with the Microsoft Office suites. It never has,
nor will it likely ever be, a component of an operating system.

If you choose a Custom Installation using Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP you can choose to install just the Microsoft
Photoeditor. But be forewarned. Doing so will change many of your image file associations. Especially jpg. Before
you install it you should back up your registry some keys in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Use regedit and select the
keys for the extensions that you do not want to lose your settings like gif, jpg, tif and so on. Export those keys and
name them like gif.reg, jpg.reg and so on. Then after you install the Photoeditor you can double-click those reg files
and get your file associations back. You will also nedd to save HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfiles so that if you are
using IE to open jpg files you will also get back the correct configuration in IE for files of that type.
