Microsoft Management Console and Device Manager Issue!

Guest

Howdy,

It seems that I have lost the capability to bring up the Device Manager from
the Hardware tab of My Computer properties. When I try to do this, it says,
'Microsoft Management Console- The selected file cannot be found'. Any help
here as to what has happened and how to correct it? Thanks in advance.

What happens if you click Start, click Run, type: devmgmt.msc and click
OK?

devmgmt.msc is the Device Manager and should be in %windir%\system32 or
C:\WINDOWS\system32

Hi Bobby,

For Pro

Go to Start/Run and type in: mmc /a. Go to File and choose Add/Remove
Snap-in. Click Add then scroll down to Device Manager, Add. Save it to
devmgmt.msc in %windir%\system32.

Other suggestions:

To create a shortcut to the Device Manager, to see if it works from your
desktop:

Go to Start/Run and type in: devmgmt.msc. If the Device Manager opens,
create a shortcut to this file C:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc

Added info: If the Device Manager is empty:

Go to Start/Administrative Tools/Services. Scroll down to Plug and Play
Service and stop and restart it. Once done the Device Manager will populate
again.

Lastly:

To extract: Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in the command below: (Substitute
C and D accordingly).

C:\>extract d:\i386\devmgmt.ms_ c:\windows\system32
\devmgmt.msc

where d: is your CD rom Drive with your windows XP CD.
Whatever your CD rom drive letter is then substitute it in
the command line.

Or:

Restore the Device Manager (Line 107) Right hand side

I have created a device manager shortcut that will open up the device manager
just fine. I have been using this. I was just wondering why the other
standard method is not longer working and how to reconcile it so I can still
get there either way. I guess it is an anal thing for me. Thanks for more
help.
