[Device Manager] load problem

OS - XP home sp2 w/ all critical patches and updates

Recently when I try to open the Device Manager via System Properties >
Hardware tab > Device Manager I receive the following dialog box:

Microsoft Management Console
Snap-in failed to initialize.
Name:Device Manager
CLSID:{74246BFC-4C96-11D0-ABEF-0020AF6B0B7A}

I click OK and the Device Manager window opens with this inside:

Red Circle with white X Snap-in Creation failed
The snap-in is not created, it may not be installed properly.
Name:Device Manager
CLSID:{74246BFC-4C96-11D0-ABEF-0020AF6B0B7A}

However, I can go to Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Device
Manager and have the desired access. There is another error message that
appears when doing this, that may/may not be related:

Microsoft Management Console
Name:performanace Logs and Alerts Extensions
CLSID:{7478EF65-8C46-11D1-8D99-00A0C913CAD4}

The CLSID references are in the registry, but are not initializing. Short
of a reinstall of XP, what do I need to do that will fix this? *note:* I am
not familiar with the recovery console, so I would need explicit
step-by-step instructions.

TIA, to all for your suggestions and time.

Try installing xp cd,exit the page,go to run,type:cmd In cmd type:
Sfc /Scannow When its thru type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,then
type:EXIT Restart computer,remove cd.You can also type in run:mmc
In mmc,select,file,add snap-in,in the new window select device mgr.,however
this also places the administrator functions in all programs list,the 1st
should
take care of it.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions, unfortunately neither of them worked
for Device Manager. I still received the original error message about the
Snap-in failed to initialize. I was able to add the Performance Logs and
Alerts Extensions via the MMC. What else can I try?

Any other ideas or suggestions?
