Microsoft, look here ==> bug with New Hardware Wizard

Guest

I use a SCSI Epson Perfection 600 flatbed scanner which Windows XP dows not
recognize. When the hardware wizard pops up, it fails to find a driver for
the scanner but even so, I cannot CANCEL the annoying window from popping up
FOUR more times after I pressed CANCEL!

Hoping that SP2 will fix the problem, I installed it but now the NEW
Hardware Wizard looks fancier but it is still WORTHLESS! You get three
options with the NEW Hardware Wizard: you can look for a driver

* Yes, this time only
*Yes, now and every time.........
*No, not this time

Regardles which option you pick. the goddam annoying window now pops up SIX
times regardless!

Microsoft, please fix this piece of shit!

Microsoft does not write drivers for old scanners. If Epson
elected not to provide a downloadable driver designed for
Windows XP, your issue is with Epson and not Microsoft.

A. You aren't talking to Microsoft here. This is a public newsgroup
hosted on Microsoft servers. While some MS employees do post here
occasionally, most of the posters are volunteers with no connection to
Microsoft.

B. It is up to the hardware mftr. (Epson) to write drivers for their
hardware for various operating systems. If Epson has not written
drivers for this scanner, then you are out of luck. Take up the issue
with Epson. If Epson has written drivers for this device for Windows
2000, you might try those.

Any particular reason you won't install the device drivers provided by
the scanner's manufacturer? Then you would have to deal with WinXP
trying to do your chore for you.

Mr. Finch:

The legal scanner, which I own and is very hard to find these days when
everything is made out of cheap disposable plastic, works perfectly well
with Vuescan. My complaint was not about the scanner -- you would have
noticed that had you paid close attention to what I wrote -- but about the
stupid bug im Microsoft Windows XP AND SP2's
not-ready-for-prime-time-Hardware Wizard.

Your link you provided is all but worthless considering most the information
predated SP-2 RTM.

Have you checked the manufacturer for updated drivers?
Drivers are the manufacturers responsibility and not Microsoft.

If Windows "it fails to find a driver for" as you said, and the manufacturer
does not support this scanner with Windows XP, the best thing to do is
disconnect the scanner from the computer.

How old is the scanner?
Ease to find these days or original cost are not relevant.

......

Don't have the original message but do wonder why the scanner is not seen?
I run here a stone old Epson GT-8500 flatbed and it runs just fine connected
to a scsi card in WinXP SP2

ummm, gee... if the scanner isn't being recognized and you can't use it
anyway, why not just un-plug it from the computer.

Other than that, try going to Epson for help as they obviously did not
supply Microsoft with XP compatable drivers for that scanner (it's not
Microsofts fault).
