Microsoft Communities

If you get an error message about Communities while using the
news server, go to Tools, Options, uncheck "Use newsgroup
message rating features."

It works!

Gotta ask: "How did you ever discover this?" It won't hut my feelings if
you don't answer this.

Thanks

It worked for me too.

When I get a new program, I like to explore all the menu options.
I'm naturally curious. But it helps that I've been deeply involved
with troubleshooting personal computers for 22 years, so I
understand all the 'geek' terminology. I subscribe to all the
online technical newsletters, and do extensive beta testing for
Microsoft.

Windows Mail is apparently intermixing NNTP (newsgroup) functionality with
XML Web Services to fetch community metadata like "[QUESTION]/answer/comment"
or author information associated with a particular newsgroup post.

It seems that while the NTTP service is running, the community metadata web
service is down. And from what I can tell, there's nothing we can do in the
client to disable the community metadata crap, so we have to suffer through
these ANNOYING ERROR MESSAGES!!! :-/

You can easily turn the Communities stuff off:
Tools, Options, uncheck "Use newsgroup message rating features."

Gary,

Get a clue will you, stop posting how we can turn communities OFF. WE KNOW
HOW TO DO THAT. We are looking for a fix to the problem, not how to AVOID
the problem.

When I open Windows Mail and go to Microsoft Communities and cleck on
one of
the Newsgroups I wish to read I receive the following message.
"Windows Mail
is unable to use Microsoft Communities features at this time. Please
try
signing into Microsoft Communities again later." This has been going
on for
the past few days. I've changed nothing. Any one else receive this
message?
What am I doing wrong? I have changed nothing knowingly.

Gary,

Please............We are looking for a fix, not a way to avoid the problem.
You would think that with 22 years of so called experience would have
learned how to read.

I don't see you posting how to "fix" the problem. At least I'm
doing something useful. Several people have written me back,
thanking me for advising how to turn off that nuisance error message.

If you had any background in NNTP you'd know that the error is a server
issue that CANNOT be fixed from the user end.

These newsgroups are perfectly usable, as they always were, before
Microsoft decided to add the flaky Communities feature.

Although I don't have a "fix" neither do you. You do however have a
"workaround" that will resolve the error message but will not fix the
problem. Just a little clarification.....that's all.

Don't use the unreliable web interface to Microsoft Communities.
If you will click on the following link, you can read this newsgroup

Yes, I just started having the problem this morning also.

This is an intermittent problem with the communities server when using the
communities feature of WM, close WM and try again?

Yeah, its completely busted. Go to Tools | Options and uncheck the option
to use the newsgroup ratings feature.

When this window pops up and I say OK, it just goes away and I can read and
send using this community. I can live with that since it allows me to read
and send to the communities. It has to be a silly bug that Microsoft has to
fix.

G

Gary VanderMolen

Right...
It's only been broken off and on for the past 7 months.
Do yourself a favor and turn that feature off.

True, but you may have also noted that your questions are probably posting as
comments and not as questions in the newgroup. While messages and replies
can still be posted, they do not retain their character (question, comment,
or suggestion) as marked in the original message. They may also be void of
other enhanced rating capabilities. Capabilities that would be nice if they
worked.

We are also having the same problem and it has persisted for a couple weeks
now, not just days. With this problem obviously affecting so many people,
perhaps Microsoft technicians should reply directly to this message thread
and provide an official explanation, an assurance that the issue is being
addressed, or even a solution? Are the Microsoft monitors listening?
