Messenger keeps asking to update

I recently installed EZ antivirus which may be why this is happening but I am
not sure. I keep getting a message every few minutes telling me that there
is a newer version of Messenger that I need to install in order to continue"
it pops up asking me to install it constantly. I noticed this happened after
I had installed the antivirus but I also recently installed MS antispyware.
I don't even use Messenger so I want this annoying thing to stop. How do I
disable Messenger? It is not listed in the Add Remove Programs. If I can't
uninstall the thing - how do I keep it from asking me to update it every 3
minutes? Thank you.

First, which Messenger: MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger?

Second, both of them are correctly listed in my Add or Remove Programs.

I assumed it is Windows Messenger. It just came up again and is Windows
Messenger. When I clicked on Outlook Express it came up. They are not in
my list of ADD or Remove Programs. I unclicked that Windows Messenger come
up when windows started and that didn't seem to help. thank you

Greetings,

You can stop Messenger for being loaded with Outlook Express by closing OE, then downloading
and running the following .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

To disable Windows Messenger, open it up (click Start, then Run, type "msmsgs" and click OK),
click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program when Windows starts' or
'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as well as 'Allow this
program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in the background'
(depending on version).
