Messages marked as read get automatically deleted

After using Windows Mail for a while with no problems, suddenly I find that
when the messages are marked as read (preview pane visible below the message
list), if I either go to another folder within Mail or exit Mail then restart
it, that particular messages that were marked as read have disappeared from
the Inbox. And they are not in the Deleted Items folder.

I have no idea why this started taking place and where the deleted messages
'are'. If anyone has any inisight into what has happened, please let me
know; it will be much appreciated.

Thanks loads, mac - much appreciated. That seems to have corrected the
problem. I have no idea how that setting got changed in the first place.
