mconfig startup

Where can I find the descriptions for items listed in MSCONFIG STARTUP and
if it's safe to uncheck any of the boxes? I think there are some programs
running in the background that may not be necessary and are slowing down my
processor. In particular, there seems to be a Symantec shared program
called "ccAPP.exe" that doesn't close right away whenever I restart or close
down Windows..... I get a window and progress bar that shows the program is
ending. After that completes, Windows shuts down or restarts. Thanks.

here is the site for ccAPP.exe
http://www.auditmypc.com/process/ccapp.asp

Some of the tiltles/programs listed under MSconfig are easy to figure out
some are not.
If you do a google search on the program/file name you will find what it
relates to and then you can decide wether you wish it to start or
not......Not everybody's list is the same

Peter and Stubbo, thanks for the info. As for ccAPP.exe, now I know I can't
get rid of it because it's a core component of my Norton antivirus program.
As for the site Stubbo posted, now I can learn what all of the items are.

Msconfig should not be used to permanently stop programs from running
at Start Up. The utility is a Diagnostic Tool. Use other ways to stop a
programme running at Start-Up.

Hope this helps.
