McAfee disables IE

The school where I work has a licence for McAfee that allows me to use it
for free. I just installed it:

McAfee(R) VirusScan(R) Enterprise Version 8.0i

....with default settings on XP home (SP2) and let it do a disk scan. It
found one virus in the recycle bin and seemed to be working okay. I
rebooted and got new email to verify the email scanner.

Then when I tried to launch IE, nothing happened. I tried various links and
also tried disabling McAfee and nothing happened. I disabled the SP2
firewall and still couldn't browse. Without IE, I couldn't get to the web
to get troubleshooting information. So I tried to uninstall McAfee, but got
an explorer.exe exception when I tried to access the control panel. That
made me very nervous.

I was finally able to access the control panel and uninstall McAfee and IE
immediately started working normally again.

I had been reading some favorable reviews of McAfee in terms of detection,
but I'm concerned about stability. Has anybody here seen these kinds of
symptoms before?

IMHO mcafee and norton both do more harm than good to your system. Both
use a ton of memory and will slow down your computer.

I would use one of the following.

grisoft AVG
avast
or if you want to pay NOD32 www.eset.com

I've gone back to AVG free and it's very stable. I gave up on Norton
partly for the reasons you gave.

I tried out the McAfee corporate because my college has a corp licence and
because McAfee has recently been getting strong detection scores. But
after this fiasco I'm not impressed with its stability.

Thanks for asking them to help, but if they've never seen these symptoms
before, I don't feel like taking the time to debug the issue and risk
screwing up my computer. I did make sure that port 80 was not blocked. As
I said, it was a default installation.

Understand where u are coming from.

Though from what they and some retail mods say vs8.0i is far superior to vs9
that is why i was surprised with your issue.
