Maybe OT but of interest to some

Forgot to mention that the website above is just great! And Think All
already has a long list of complainers.

Thanks.

Jeff,

Don't resign, I'd add my complaint to the (growing) list as well... The
funny thing about all this is that seem to be in business since early
this year; before that no mentioning of them. MNust be a "Get Rich, The
Fast Way" scheme!

Good ideas. Their lousy business practices are already on several
sites, mentioned in this thread. I have a few other ideas I'm going
to follow up on.

I like Lou's idea. if a few of the ACF-subscribers could pull together
and make a compilation of the information found on this company, then
each of them in turn would post the message, let's say once a week! If
you want to do it this way: Count me in!

Gosh, I guess I don't know the difference. How is GPL different
from Open
Source?

Basically, under the GPL people can sue you under Federal and
International copyright laws for screwing around with GPL software.

C

Chris Lee

The GPL is one of many open source licenses.

Wrong. The GPL license has *NOTHING TO DO WITH OPEN SOURCE* licenses.

They are two and compleatly diffrent things.

C

Chris Lee

As far as price.

Free software gives you a package to install and run. Open source
gives you the source code as well Or sometimes JUST the source code
-
you compile it yourself. If you can't, that's too bad. (Usually
only with *nix software.)

Wrong again. You're confusing freeware which consits of giving you a
package to install and run, especially where PC's running Windows and Macs
are concerned, with the Free Software/Open Source movement where you
can get the source code as well or sometimes JUST the source code.

Jeff said:
Yup, saw that one. Just incredible.

If contacting the software authors doesn't work, maybe a complaint to
the FTC:

http://www.ftc.gov/

will get some action, even if THINK ALL is outside of the U.S. But I
don't think the company is foreign located because I was able to find
this inclusion in item 13 of their TOU (asterisks added for emphasis):

"These terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with
applicable federal law and the laws of the State of *Texas*, without
giving effect to any principles of conflicts of law. You agree that any
action at law or in equity arising out of or relating to these terms or
the products, services, software or web site shall be filed only in the
courts in and for *Plano, Collin County, Texas* and you hereby consent
and submit to the personal jurisdiction of such courts for the purposes
of litigating any such action."

Perhaps contacting the closest BBB to Plano, TX will lead to more info.

I also found this site:

http://www.insidetxbiz.com/adminnm/templates/databeat.asp?articleid=760&zoneid=10

where this is listed:

Think All Publishing LLC, 5700 Granite Pkwy #200, 75024, Think All
Publishing LLC, Frisco, 511210

and this one:

http://forum.worldstart.com/showthread.php?t=88011

where this address is given:

THINK ALL PUBLISHING, PO BOX 462009, GARLAND TX 75046, 800-462-8144

I think the second one is current.

I'm convinced that their terms are far too obfuscated in that they are
listed under "Terms of Use". Terms of Use of what? That phrase isn't a
description of the "Terms of Purchase".

In the mean time, since THINK ALL may be violating the EULAs of some of
the programs they offer, perhaps complaints to the program authors might
be in order. Also, one to THINK All's website host may be in order:

mailto:[email protected]

since this would be a clear violation of that host's TOS.

This all reminds me of the old record clubs, but at least they made it
clear what you were getting into. Heck, I even joined a couple because
their records were so cheap. Never really had a problem with any of
those companies. This business though, seems to be out to trick people,
so I think the FTC needs to know what they're up to.

By the way, check out this page:

https://www.thinkall.com/news.php

I think I'm going to puke.

Thanks. I wonder how often this happens.

The differences between free software and open-source software don't
involve the source -- the source must be made available to all users in
both cases.

NONSENSE!

I've released tons of freeware over the years without ever making the
source available.

I think I read that somewhere.

Oh, yes, it's exactly what I said right above.

I wasn't talking about freeware, but rather free software. There are
links to info about free software elsewhere in the thread, if you're

Free software is software for which there is no price, not software
you're free to do what you want with. The latter is called "public
domain", and most freeware is *NOT* in the public domain.

That's not what free software is. See my response to your "NONSENSE!"
post in this thread.

Free <x> means that you can legally obtain <x> with no payment. Stop
reinventing English.

Free <x> means that you can legally obtain <x> with no payment.

There are more than one meaning for the adjective "free" in English.
E.g., Merriam-Webster doesn't get to the one you seem insistent on
until it's given nine others. I can't find a dictionary that puts it
above seventh place, but I only looked at a few.
Stop reinventing English.

Cute. Stop misusing the term "free software".

You might want to e-mail the Open Source Initiative and have them
"correct" their website, then.

<http://opensource.org/licenses/index.php>

Why bother? The Open Source Initiative has *NOTHING* to do with
the GPL.

The people responsible for the GPL is the FSF (Free Software Foundation)
whom pretty much has nothing to do with the Open Source Initiative.

If you Windows types want to comment about Free and Open Source Software,
you'ld better had first learn just who and what the players are.
