Maxthon vs firefox

O

omziff

The only downside I can see to using IE wrappers, such as Maxthon or
Avant, etc., is that this just increases the amount of people using
non-standards compliant browsers.

This sort of may can also falsely boost the amount of Internet Explorer
users in one's site stats. Say for eg., if over half of the visitors
recorded using IE, are actually using Maxthon, it just boosts IE user
stats.

Best thing people can do is either switch to a gecko-based browser, or
use anything other than an IE-based one, IHMO.

Why?

I use Maxthon and I am very pleased with it. And don't tell me about
geckos better security after those very critical Firefox-holes.

between these 2, I am using Maxthon 80% when surfing, Firefox 10% and IE 10%
(when some sites insists that I use IE)

What I like about Maxthon is that I can group certain sites into 1 group and 1
click displays all the sites

Some settings in Maxthon don't work and there's a java flaw with Firefox.

got to wait and see what IE 7 has got to offer..........

"SAN FRANCISCO--Reversing a longstanding Microsoft policy, Bill Gates said Tuesday that the company will ship an update to its

A beta, or test, version of Internet Explorer 7 will debut this summer, Microsoft's chairman and chief software architect said in a

I'm almost tempted to upgrade to XP

You currently use win98? You would be grateful of an upgrade to XP if your
pc can handle it. You have much more control over your operating system,
its more secure and offers more functionality. My Mum's pc is quite old and
runs windows98. I am trying to save up so I can get her a new windows XP
machine.
As for IE7, I will download the beta as soon as it is available.

Security issues aside, Maxthon & Avant are fine as far as they
go, but I switched to FF because it's more configurable.

Actually out of the box Win98 is more secure than WinXP as it has no open
ports. I run Win98SE with ADSL and no firewall and have never had a security
incident.

How would you know you are having a security incident unless you have a
firewall which alerts you?
Thats like people who say they have no antivirus but have never had a
virus - they may not even know it :)
For all you know somebody could be looking at your files right now.

There are other ways to tell if there has been a breach (I don't care about
attempts) I regularily run scans for spyware, viruses, trojans, rootkits
etc. To date nothing (not even tracking cookies) has made it onto my
machine. In addition Win98 has very few background processes which makes it
simple to identify a new/rogue process. I have been running this way for
many years.

Relying on a firewall to protect you can be misleading. It won't stop you
from downloading a trojan or other nasty. It MAY inform you if that nasty
tries to get out (depending on how it get's out and the type of firewall you
have).

Common sense does not always help, even the most knowledgeable of users can
get caught out.

You either have a virus or your commonsense.exe file is corrupted.
Commonsense.exe is known to prevent top-posting.

<snipped what should have gone before...at least according to
commonsense.exe>

Well, not getting into this issue, I have heard it from more than 2
computer geeks, well, I think they're computer geeks <g>, that Win98SE
is much more stable. I find XP, despite any gains, is the worst OS to
work in. I've set up for friends/family on Win98SE, Win2K at the
offic and XP at various homes and XP is nowhere near as easy to use.
It takes someone like me, a power user, with a minimum of experience
to work in XP getting it set up, etc. I'd rather get the P4 with all
the benefits of the power but install Win98SE or Win2K. My 2 cents
worth only, though. I just like having DOS, too, what can I say? ...

Yes, I just love how you can get extensions for practically anything!
I've never had a browser that was so in tune with my needs. I'm still
missing out on a thing or two, mainly how easy it is to save webpages
in IE with the source URL automatically dumped within the html code of
the saved page. So I just have an extension for opening a page in IE
when I need to save pages <g>. FF rocks. :blush:D
