Maxthon to Avant

Freezes, excessive CPU usage ... don't know what was making Maxthon do this,
but I didn't want to take much more time to figure it out.

Downloaded Avant. Think I'm going to like it ... a lot!

I do miss the little Maxthon trick of just dragging and dropping a link to
open the webpage in a new tab.

And I wish Avant would use the term "tab" instead of "window". I don't want
to open new "window", I want to open a new tab!

Maybe I'll try some others. I noticed though that Avant was runner-up to
Maxthon in the last Pricelessware vote, for IE Shells.

Yes, there is a nasty "poof" bug (it closes instantly with no errors) in
Maxthon ATM, but Blood Chien is working on it.

I tried Avant again recently, but can't deal with the way it handles groups.

Maybe give Green Browser another whirl and see what's new...

Yeah, now's a good time for me to try out the other IE shells to see which
might best suit me.

Or, I could try to "downgrade" Maxthon to a trouble-free version, if I could
figure out what it is.

FWIW, MSN Search Toolbar adds tabs to IE. But I doubt that it gives IE
anything like the functionality of the better shells.

I am wondering whether my Maxthon problems could be related to my
installation of MSN Search Toolbar including MSN Desktop Search?

Right click>open in new window

Tab is a drink;-)

I've tried most of the tabbed browsers and Avant is my browser of choice.
There are minor differences and I found the user interface to be more
amenable to my wishes (I can actually set it up the way I want).

I'm curious as to your issues with Avant and groups?

Tis a cigarette or a word used to suggest "credit" (post-paid instead of
pre-paid, charges for goods (food, drink, clothing etc)) over here ;o)

Not really issues. I just don't like the way Avant handles groups.

*You can not directly open a group from the "Groups" drop down menu. You
must select a submenu. (OK, not a biggie, but why is it designed that way?)

*When selecting a new group, the old group stays open. This forces me to
remember to close the open group, or I'll end up with 9,000 open tabs. :)
In Maxthon, you can opt for all tabs to close when opening a new group.

*When starting Avant (or Green), you can not choose to start by opening a
default group. That makes my "Home Group" pretty useless. :)

Maxthon, Avant, Slim, and Green are all fine browser shells. There's not
much to separate them at all. I use Maxthon only because of the above group
features and a couple of more, just a matter of taste.

Turning off the "popup Stopper" and allowing IE6 to control popups cooled it
off quite a bit for me. I only get an occasional "poof" now.

I've been happily using Avant for ~1 month but the main thing which
bugs me is that it still loses the focus on some open pages, requiring
the page to be clicked to regain it. Even the latest version has this
problem. Also some irritations with the design of dialog buttons and
numerous other small design annoyances.

I like the built in RSS feed utility.

Oh, look! A rare bird! It's the snorting snickering Mozilla fanboy bird! It
makes lots of noise, shits all over the place, then flies away.

If you want these options I have found that the author is pretty amenable
to changes. Visit the Avant forums and ask for them:

The focus issue has been around for a while and appears to be related to the
popup blocker.

I didn't know that. I'll try turning it off to test.
I wonder why the author hasn't found a way to fix it.

This is just my observations. I still have issues with the pop-up blocker in
Avant. I can close all windows after visiting numerous sites and when I open
a new window a (possibly blocked) pop-up suddenly appears? Avant's not
perfect but it's still a might fine program.

I was cracking on how LOUSY the MSN toolbar is. I have used IE/Avant in
the past and enjoyed using them...I just prefer Moz better.

It is called "sarcasm".

I tested switching off the pop-up blockers and it didn't seem
to make any difference - Avant still loses focus.

I've not noticed the related problem you mention. In fact, I don't
suffer any pop-ups but that *may* be related to my ZA firewall
which also blocks them.

Pardon my mistake. Most of the sarcasm comes from MS and Mozilla fanboys,
and I wasn't paying close attention.
