memory use AVG? Avant

M

There's been some discussion recently on AVG memory use, and I was a bit
aloof due to my main box not having a problem - I only watch resources.

However I fired up my old box on 98lite, and found with AVG7 installed, I
could not open Thunderbird and Firefox at the same time.

But with Avant, which I'd tried and didn't like, I could.

The computer's got 128Mb of memory; I can easily increase it, but first I'd
like to know what's going on.

My main crib with Avant is there doesn't seem to be a way to shut it, apart
from enditall, and I don't want to have to keep a prog just to shut a prog!

And I do occasionally shut these AV and firewalls down for image or music
manipulation.

So, can anyone point me to a good prog to check memory use? I've got
memload from pricelessware, but find it a bit basic and uninfiormative to a
muppet like me.

And apologies to all the folks who said "AVG7 is a memory issue" and I went
"yeah, yeah"

I use rampage to keep an eye on memory , on my 98 machine. It uses very
litle resources and sits in the syten tray freeing a specified amount.I
had problems with avg7 on my system genearlly slowing it down and causing
freezes. It seems to cause problems on some and not others, though i dont
belive the problem was a memory issue. If you still have problems i
suggest using avast or antivir.Heres link for rampage...

Thanks to both, they both look like good progs, I'll try both.

AVG7 is definitely a memory issue on my second puter, maybe it's because
it's been a lomg time since I've used one with 128 megs, I know it's not
enough, but as I'm working towards 98 lite sleek shell, I don't want to
use bloated software.

(I really like AVG).

I've tried Avant, and it seems ok, but I want to be able to close it,
there doesn't seem to be a way, ATM I'm on Antivir, and first
impressions are excellent; I'll see how it goes. Neither crashes my
other machine when I open firefox and Thunderbird together (quick rule
of thumb I've discovered)

Thanks for your help
