Maxthon vs. Avant?

Both were developed independently and are updated regularly (which can
not be said of all other tabbed IE add-ons). So, there we have it,
the battle of the two giants among the tabbed IE browser add-ons:
Maxthon vs. Avant. Who has compared them extensively and can give an
unbiased opinion based on experience and facts?

Still can't beat Firefox no matter how hard you try.

I can't claim to have "compared them extensively", but I have tried and adopted
Avant, until I discovered Maxthon (ex-MyIE2). I switched and never regretted
Avant.

Why? More intuitive and more usefully powerful for me. YMMV

I prefer Avant mostly because the Send Page function works like it
should, It sends the whole page within the body of the e-mail message.

Absolutely - sorry to say it, but FF, T/Bird and Mozilla were all very
disappointing.
now *that i don't agree with. i've been very happy with ff once i
tweaked it to suit my needs or used a pre-compiled customization such
as moox, and the new 1.01 version is fine out of the box. i have also
used it to replace ie as default browser on most of my client's
systems. none of them have any complaints, and all of them have
reported very little problems with web-bourne infections.

why do you find ff disappointing?

I think you should try them both to see which you like better.
Personally, I prefer Avant.
Having said that, I use Firefox most of the time.

Avant beats FF hands down

A simple question about FF and Avant...
If IE is my default browser, I can double click an icon on my desktop to
open a web page. In Avant, which is my default browser, I can't do this. I
have to start Avant first then load the page from my Groups or
Favourites...kind of a stupid way to do a simple thing. Perhaps I am missing
something in preferences or whatever?
Can you double click a desktop icon (url) in FF and have it open in the
browser?

Thanks

why do you find ff disappointing?
It has a "clunky" feel; I admit that isn't important.

Most impotrtantly, and this applies to T'bird too, they were both running
as default and I would have stuck with them, at different times theuy
failed mysteriously for a few weeks.

I tred to get help, after uninstalling, reinstalling, clearing them right
out, trying again, etc. but they resolutely refused to run.

These events were not at the same time, I ditched T'bird first. I know I
was not alone, because I found similar posts in the forums, but there was
absolutely no help available to those of us with these problems, it felt
almost like being airbrushed out of existence like out-of-favour
politicians in a communist regime.

T'bird started again as mysteriously as it stopped, but my mail was in such
a mess I won't trust it again.

Ff I solved by copying the program folders from my second computer, and
this fixed it. Just as well I had it installed on a second computer.

I will probably never trust open source type stuff again with important
tasks

Right click > Open with > Browse and select FF + mark as default
application for this filetype.

It sounds as if Avant has not made all the registry changes it needs
to when you let it make itself the default browser. Windows should
look at the protocol (usually http) of the Windows "Internet
Shortcut" file and call the default handler for that protocol. You
can get at the default handler settings for the various protocols
via My Computer|Tools|Folder Options|File Types. You want the one
called "URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol", and probably some others.
Can you double click a desktop icon (url) in FF and have it open
in the browser?

Yeah. I use the no-install version of Firefox, and all I did was to
check the default browser option in Tools|Options|General. Clicking
a Windows "Internet Shortcut" icon which calls gopher, ftp, http, or
https as the protocol brings up Firefox. The "Internet Shortcut"
filetype is still associated with IE, but that doesn't matter.

Every time someone asks a question comparing IE browsers there seems to
be a flood of responses ignoring the question and commenting on the
value of firefox. Which is off-topic as far as I can see. This isn't
about comparing IE browsers with firefox.

I'm still curious about people's experience with these 2. I use firefox
most of the time but have to use an IE browser to access my work via
vpn. I switch between maxthon and avant and sometimes slimbrowser. I
tend to use avant over maxthon because configuring the tabs to work the
way I want seems confusing and I never get it quite right.

I looked at both about a year ago and settled on Avant primarly becuase it
had a more customizable user interface. They offer similar functionality and
Avant is updated on a regular basis. I am very happy with Avant and haven't
found any reason to look at Maxthon again.
