Manually downloading WD updates

I am a service technician for 5 O'Clock Computers / Linked Technologies,
Inc., a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner. I often go on service calls to
customers' houses. I carry a CD that has, among other things, Windows
Defender. I often need to update software without having access to the
internet. However, I cannot find the update file on the Microsoft site. I
searched for the string on the update file of "definition update 1.14.1389.7"
and could not find anything.

How can I download the updater file?

Next time you are sitting at a desktop that has just updated Windows
Defender, open \windows\windowsupdate.log in Notepad. Move the cursor to
the end of the file and search UP for .exe --look for .exe on the end of a
very long URL. you'll find few short .exe's that you can ignore, and then a
long one. Capture that long URL, download that file, and add it to the CD.

I haven't actually done this except on a desktop with Internet
connectivity--but this is what I'd try.

Bill,

I did a search for windowsupdate.log on my hard drive and got no result. I'm
on XP with WD Beta 2. Am I missing a step?

Thanks

Hello John,

Same OS, I found 2 refernces:

1.- Windows folder, all the way in the end of the page.
2.- Windows/Documents and Settings/your name/Recent

I hope this post is helpful.
Let us know how it works ºut.

Yes you're missing this step...

Do a start, run, type "eventvwr.msc", **click OK**, then click on
**System**, then View, then Filter, and scroll down the " event source"

control to reach Windefend, that will give you a view of just Windows

Defender-related events.

....oops ignore that last post I thought you were looking for the event log
not the windows update log, sorry

No worries, in fact it may have gotten us closer to a resolution.

Here's the direct report;
Windows Defender Configuration has changed. If this is an unexpected event
you should review the settings as this may be the result of malware.
Old value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\SignatureLocation = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition
Updates\{9A686CC9-3542-415C-9647-6CA5A23703B7}
New value: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Signature
Updates\SignatureLocation = C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition
Updates\{67A68BE4-24FB-469E-ADC0-48C8637E098E}

So that would explain what is going on. Funny thing is that after doing the
msiexec work I now get the bubble down in the lower right corner saying all
backups were succesful, just to have defender still reporting that it is out
of date. :\

We'll get there. What steps would you recommend next?

Umm--no. Maybe the default settings for the search app need to be
changed--Search system folders, and search subfolders would be needed, I
think.
