Making Window Mail default mail handler??

Ever since I installed Office 97 (yes I know it's old :) ) Windows Mail has
changed from being my default handler. I removed Outlook and then removed
Office 97 but still I cannot get Windows Mail to be my default mail program.
When I click on "make default" and then go right back in to check, it has
already changed back to not being the default handler. What can I do?

How did you make it default?

Try Control Panel | Default Programs and then set WinMail there as default.

If that doesn't work then try going to Start | Search and copy and paste the
line below. Then check Control Panel | Default Programs again.

"c:\program files\windows mail\winmail.exe" /reg

Originally I tried making Winmail my default under Tools/Options (inside
WinMail). When I go under Default Programs it show only Win Mail (News)
which only lets me change the news handler. There is no program listed for
WinMail (Mail) When I go to "Set Program Access and Computer Defaults" it
only shows "Use my current email program" with no options to change it. I
tried using "c:\program files\windows mail\winmail.exe" /reg but it did not
work either. It's like it does not recognize WinMail. It will not let me
email webpages, that option is greyed out.

Is there a way of reinstalling just WinMail? Perhaps I corrupted some files
when installing Office 97. Or should I just reinstall Vista?

Problem solved! I reinstalled Vista and it is back to normal.

Thanks for your input Steve.

When you reinstalled, did you lose anything? I have the same problem with
Outlook 2003 I installed but don't want to lose all of the work I have done,
programs I have installed, contact and address books I have input, etc.

Thanks for the response.

This is helful but my problem is that direct sending of WORD Documents (and
EXEL) defaults to Outlook, when Windows Mail is my default e-mail. Docs and
EXCEL do not list in my list of default programs and, as I only installed
Office 2007 yesterday, I am a bit nervous over how to load them.
