Default Mail Handler

I installed MS Office 2003 and now when I press the Email button on my
keyboard Outlook opens instead of Windows Mail. Outlook setting is not to
make it the default mail handler. In Windows Mail the make default buttons
are grayed out, I can't change it to make Windows Mail the default mail
handler.

Try this and see if it works for you. Click WinKey+R to open the Run line
and type:
winmail /reg
Note the space between the ending of winmail and the /reg

Then open Outlook Express and see if it's now listed as your default Mail
and News handler.

Is this on your own personal computer or one at your workplace? If at a
workplace, your IT people may have altered it.

See if you can find a 'No Check Default' DWORD at this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Mail

Or if this is an upgraded installation (i.e., Vista over XP) then see if
this old key (for Outlook Express) exists:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Mail
And in the right side column:
No Check Default
If Value data is 1
Change it to 0

Tried what you said twice, and it's still grayed out.

Try Control Panel | Programs
Under Default Programs click "Set program defaults on this computer".

Yeah, I think that is going to be the recommended solution. Outlook
continues to like to screw up WinMail, just as it does OE.

Should I unistall outlook 2003 if I want to use windows mail? I am unable to
set as default - several programs do not work with windows mail and suggest I
set as default.
