MailWasher - recover deleted email?

T

Terry Pinnell

Any MailWasher user around who can help me please? I want to recover
an email that I previewed briefly amongst the predominant spam. On
using Process Mail it didn't turn up in my email reader (Agent), so I
must have failed to notice it was marked for deletion.

Just managed to sort it myself. Digging around in
C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Application Data\MailWasher I found
a file spamlog.txt. Pleased to find that it included the email
addresses of recently deleted emails.

If it has been deleted from the server then you are probably out of
luck unless you can remember who sent it to you and ask them to send
it again.

Open the MailWasher Help File.
On the Index tab, search for 'Restore deleted email'
It gives full instructions there for restoring email.

For those of us with the free version of Mailwasher, we get the following :-

Q. Can I get deleted messages back?
A. Unfortunately not, you may be able to contact your internet
service provider and see if they back up their messages. Otherwise you will
have to write back to the sender if you can remember them and ask for their
message again.

That will teach us to "shell out" in future :)

It's deleted from the server when you select delete from within mailwasher.
I haven't used the free version in a long while so can only speak for the
registered version. This will keep track of mail deleted using mailwasher
for a user controlled number of days and is recoverable. Just be careful you
correctly configure details of where recovered mail should be sent. You
don't get an error message if this is wrong.

I suppose , strictly speaking, this is OT.
However, the payware version reverts to a cripple after a trial period
and has the same characteristics as the freeware except that the
'Recover deleted mail' function still operates.

Does it really? Are you quite sure about that? Are you saying that you need
to pay for trial period?

Not in my experience.

What /exactly/ are you trying to say?

Another trick is to not delete "deleted" mail. I have mine tossed to
Trash1 in Agent. Then, every few days, I delete everything in Trash1.
If I ever make a mistake in what's going to get deleted, it's there
for me to read. Kind of a time delayed delete.

As per my OP, I'm using MailWasher (the free version; this is a
freeware group, yes?), not MailWasher Pro.

How do you configure that in MW please? We are talking about
MailWasher, yes? Not MailWasher Pro?

No, actually I dumped MW when I discovered POPMail - free at
sourceforge. But, IIRC, MW can tell your email program what folder to
put each email into. Or has it been so long that I've confused MW and
POPmail (which IMO is the better program)?
