AVG7 Free Mailwasher problem

J

Jules Baby

W98SE running Mailwasher 2.0.28 beta (last free version including
Hotmail), Outlook and Zonealarm. Now when Mailwasher Checks Mail I get
the AVG email scanner bar appearing while trying to connect to my POP
server, then error box which says:
Authentication failed for POP mail (server name). Plaintext password
authentication is not supported in this A/C. Click OK then see LOGON POP
MAIL box showing Server, User Name & Password. Password highlighted
waiting for new password.
Whatever I try I cannot get it to accept the correct password. If I
deactivate the AVG mail scanner all works well again.
I DO have a Hotmail A/c as well as POP A/c which was always fine with
AVG6. Have tried every permutation in AVG as well as Outlook to no avail,
but my server password is still correct, has never changed and shows
correctly in all setups. Anyway, it must be right to work when AVG7 is
deactivated?
Any ideas guys?

Did you try turning off the email protection in your ZoneAlarm, as
Grisoft recommends?

Here is my fix that worked when you are using mailwasher and zone alarm.
Open zone alarm, go to firewall section then zones.
Enter your email configurations ... mail.'whatever'.com or whatever it
is.
If both pop3 and smtp are the same as mine is you only need to enter it
once. If smtp is different you may have to enter it also before it
works,
click add, then apply. Doing this my Mailwasher now connects and
accesses my email ... no more plain text error
Don't know if this works with the XP sp2 firewall or not I haven't tried
it yet on my XP computer.
This was done on a computer using Windows Me\Mailwasher\ZoneAlarm

This exact same thing just started happening to me after I just this
morning installed the latest version of Avast Antivirus. I am also
running Zone Alarm and AVG. Haven't had time to go through any settings
and figure it out yet.

Still no joy. I have put every server ID for POP as well as Hotmail into
ZA trusted zones. Also turned off ZA email checking etc. Mailwasher will
read Hotmail but apparently gives error accessing POP server.
I'm stuck.
Can someone give me a link for the AVG forum please, I can't seem to find
it?

If Zone Alarm is the problem, perhaps it might be wise to turn it off. Good
virus protection (AVG) is more important than phone-home protection (ZA).
