lsass.exe swap

Hi,
I have the dreaded lsass.exe system error on my laptop, I can't get past the
login without a reboot, the normal reboot everytime, etc. I have a recovery
cd and not a full system disc. I have a full copy of another XP cd on
another computer. I have read a bunch of threads and someone is suggesting
copy c:\windows\"service pack files"\i386\lsass.exe
c:\windwows\system32\lsass.exe. I don't seem to have a service pack file on
the laptop when I use an NTFS reader. I am wondering if anyone knows can I
copy lsass.exe from this other disk using the recovery console? I know the
lsass.exe is the local security authentication service, is it a generic file
or specific to each installation? I am trying to avoid a complete reinstall
as I haven't backed up a database which can't be imported in anything else
but a backup file with a new install. The rest of the stuff is fine. I don't
think the recovery disk will give me a second option repair, only the first
with recovery console which doesn't make sense! Also welcome any other
suggestions! But main question, can I use this file if I "expand
d:\i386\lsass.ex_ c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe" in the command prompt in
recovery console using the disk from the other machine? Thanks for your

Hi,

You can use an lsass.exe file from another installation provided it is the
same version as the one you currently have (service pack level). However, if
you believe this to be the sasser worm, I don't think that is going to help
you. You will need to remove the virus.
