lsass.exe - Object Name not found

That's lsass.exe, not lssas.exe.

I get the system error "Object name not found" related to lsass.exe when I
boot. This is terminal as the PC restarts after clicking "OK". Searching
these forums turned up one suggestion to EXPAND the file from th XP CD but I
still get the same error. A repair install doesn't do the job. Does anyone
have any helpful suggestions or comments before I resort to a complete
re-install? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The above search rendered a lot of references to the Sasser Worm, see
example below:

from Airman...........
It appears you have the SASSER WORM, lsass.exe has a flaw in it, sasser worm
attacks that flaw and causes problems for the system, grab the latest
Stinger from Network Associates(Creators of McAfee Virus Scan), grab this
patch
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...9e-da3f-43b9-a4f1-af243b6168f3&displaylang=en
after grabbing those 2, turn off system restore, unplug ur computer from the
internet line, run Stinger, it should remove the crap that is causing that,
afterwards, install the patch, then enable the windows firewall and restart
computer than renable the System Restore. since i noticed that people that
are behind hardware routers and gateways dont seem to get the worms actually
compared to people on dialup or people on Internet not behind a hardware
gateway or router.

There were other items of reference, best if you check out the search
results and determine what fits your issue.

My mom has the EXACT same problem that you do. I came here looking for help
and I read the replies to your post. My question to all of that is how can
we follow the instructions if we cannot even boot up and log on?

I tried the recovery cd as well with no success.

Ray, please let me know if you had any success and if so what worked.
Anyone else, please reply to my questions to this as well.

Thank you in advance,
Tara

If you get a message something to the effect of..

NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
'c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe' terminated unexpectedly Object name not found

and you get a 60 second countown

Go to; start --> run
and enter
shutdown -a

That should stop the 60 second countdown and allow you to access the PC. Then I suggest
trying to do a System Restore to a time when the PC did not exhibit such an error.

That's not the error she gets. Also she has Windows XP not NT. The error is
"LSASS.exe System Error Object name not found". She has the option to
click OK or just "X" it out. Either way, the laptop reboots and comes back
to the same error with the same options and it will loop through this until
she just turns the computer off. She can't get to the START menu. She will
briefly get the chance to press F2 or F12 or Esc but neither of us is
familiar with any of that. I know F2 takes her to setup which I tried when I
called Compaq support. They had me use the restore CD but that did not work.
I don't know what else to try or how to use Safe Mode or DOS prompt or
anything like that. I'd hate to use the reinstall option from the CD because
I don't want her to lose everything. Are there any instructions I can follow
once I get to Safe Mode (F8), etc? Thanks in advance!

Tara:

NT4, Win2K, WinXP and Win2003 Server are *all* NT based Operating Systems. They will all
experience similar "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" type error messages.

I also must assume that you have WinXP. You know why ? This post was posted in a WinXP
News Group !

I don't know what causes that error you have described.

How does this affected PC access the Internet ?

She is not able to access the internet because she is not able to access boot
up and log on. The error occurs during the boot process. After she clicks
ok, it reboots and goes back to the same error.

Thanks,
Tara

I did not ask "can she access the Internet...".

I asked; "How does this affected PC access the Internet ?"

Back up the data - if you have some computer skills you can do this even
if you can't get into Windows with either Knoppix (Linux) or a Bart's
PE - and do a complete reinstall back to factory condition. If you
don't have the skills for the data retrieval (and it is no shame to
admit you don't), then take the laptop to a professional computer
repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

Sorry, my mistake. I misread your question. She uses dial-up to access the
internet.

Thanks,

Then that definitely precludes an Internet worm !

Follow Malke's advice.

Unfortunately, I don't have the skills for that. I wish I did. I believe my
mom still has a warranty with the Staples store where she purchased the
laptop. Are you saying she should take the laptop somewhere else though or
would Staples be able to provide this service. I really don't know what kind
of warranty it is or what support Staples provides.

Thanks,
Tara

Contact the manufacturer. If it is a HP, call them.
If it is an IBM, call them.
Yada yada.

Tara - The reason I suggest a local professional computer repair person
is that if you take the machine to Staples or send it back to the
laptop mftr. is that those entities will generally not back up the data
before restoring the machine to factory condition. You could ask the
people at Staples to be sure. Staples (at least here) is an office
supply store and the stores here don't have techs on-site; they would
just send the machine back to the mftr. Maybe it is different in your
Staples. If the data is important, a professional computer repair shop
can retrieve it. After this is all over, the people at the repair shop
can show you and your Mom how to back up the data for the future.
