Lost DVD/CD Device and USB Devices following web session.

Have COMPAQ Presario 3000 2.4 GHZ Laptop. After son web surfed, system
suddenly lost the external mouse. After reboot all USB devices gone. Use
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, Virus Scan 9.0, Webroot Spyware. Nothing
suspicious occurred. Did virus check nothing id'd. Did spyware check with
Webroot and Spybot S&D, caught adware. Nothing else. Checked device manager.
Discovered USB devices were ok but no CD/DVD device. Despite USB status on
device manager no USB devices (trackball, HP 6100 Fax/Printer, external
keyboard) seen by system. Have Win XP HE with latest updates. As of right
now I'm baffled. Anybody seen this before? I can't reload XP because the
CD/DVD reader isn't seen by the system. Tried system restore feature of XP.
No joy. I am open to suggestions. Help please. Thanks.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB devices, Action
menu, "Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers again
automatically.
