Lost defaut CD burner

Hi,

For some reason I can not longer find the default CD burner that comes with
XP. It doesn't come as an option when I insert a blank CD. I think it has to
do with installing roxio. The default burner was not very fancy but it was
simple and worked. roxio is a pain to use and takes forever. It may be that
I don't know how to run it, but I don't feel like learning right now. Anyone
know what I need to do to get the old burner back?

Thanks,

Alain

Re: "It may be that I don't know how to run it"

Yes. It works well, provding that you have it updated (a pain, but
necessary for both Roxio and Nero). Roxio and Nero are "real" CD
burning sofware, they don't try to hide the complexity and versatility
of "real" CD burning from the user. On the other hand, the "built in"
CD burning in Windows XP (which actually uses Roxio's core code) and
"packet writing" both do try to hide it, albeit in very different ways
(the "built in" burning at least creates an ISO-standard CD, while
"packet writing" (aka UDF burning) doesn't even do that).

The full Roxio product isn't really that difficult to use for basic
tasks. Open "Creator Classic", start a "data" CD (project), you will
have, effectively, two "Windows File Explorer" windows. On the top is
your computer. On the bottom is the CD that you are going to burn.
"Drag and drop" files and folders from the top to the bottom to create a
"layout" of the CD to be burned, then start the burn. It's not that
difficult, you can explore other features and modes later.

Are you talking about the XP CD burning software, or the CD-RW drive itself?
What version of Roxio are you using? For XP, you must have v5.3 or better.
Have you tried an uninstall/reinstall your Roxio software? For further
assistance, checkout the user forum at www.roxio.com .

Open My Computer and right-click on the icon for your cd-rw drive. Look
on the tab for CD Burning and make sure there is a checkmark in the box
to enable cd recording.

If you install such third party burning software it almost always
disables the inbuilt system. Especially where you install (in this
case) 'Drag to Disk' (aka Direct CD). They will fight over what drag is
intended to achieve. You can re-enable the inbuilt burning in My
Computer; right click the drive, Properties, recording page, check the
Enable box and Apply. But I would disable that aspect of the Roxio
package if you intend to do this. It may mean uninstalling and then
reinstalling *only* the Easy CD Creator component

I did actually figure it out. I was running 5.1 so it may explain why it was
so painful. It spent o lot of time looking for test files on my C: drive for
whatever reason.

Thanks for the crash course on burning. I guess you want to know about
what's happening in the backgound if you try to do fancy stuff. All I was
trying to do was the monthly backup (that I do about every other year), so
all I wanted was being able to write the files and retrieve them.

I guess I also don't like it when you install a program and suddenly another
program disappears. You don't have to deal with these when you use
UNIX/Linux and do everything from the command line. :)

Thanks for the info, but it doesn't work. When I install a blank CD I get
two options for burning: using RealPlayer or Roxio. If I cancel and then do
as you say there is no tab for CD burning.

I figured out how to use roxio, so I don't thinks I'll waste any more time
looking for the default burner.
