An e-mail misteriously dissapeared. Outlook did not report to the user that
an e-mail had an attachment. Yet when you go into the mail server youy can
see the attachment called "winmail.dat" How could this happen and how can we
prevent it from happening again?

Winmail.DAT is created by using Outlook Rich Text format to create messages.
Rich Text is only understood by Outlook, all other email clients either get
no attachment, or a winmail.dat attachment that cannot be opened. When
Outlook opens a Rich Text message, there is no attachment because
winmail.dat contains the rich text formatting information necessary to
display the message. To prevent a winmal.dat attachment, use either Plain
Text or HTML message formats to create messages (the default message format)
