Assuming you have some way to measure cpu temperature,
compare the temperature in the case after it has stabilized
against temperature with side off the case lying open side up.

I've seen a 20 degree C drop in cpu temperature with it open
for some people's systems!

If you see similar results then focussing on internal case
temperatures as opposed to just more airflow across the cpu
might be a plausible first move.

Thanks in Advance

I left the cover off my case and added an extra fan blasting the
motherboard. I put some wire grills on the sides to protect the
innards. It looks crude, but everything stays nice and cool.

Otherwise you can spend a lot of money for heat pumps and what have
you.

I have a P4 3.4 Prescott and went to liquid cooling. Check out the
Evercool WC-202. It is around $100. My only suggestion is to put
plumbers tape around the threads. It keeps my load temps about 40 F
cooler. Now around 140 F under heavy load. I have it cooling my GPU too.
