TightVNC is a free remote control package derived from the popular VNC
software. With TightVNC, you can see the desktop of a remote machine
and control it with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would
do it sitting in the front of that computer. TightVNC is:

* free, GPL-licensed, with full source code available;

* useful in remote administration, remote customer support,
education, and for many other purposes;

* cross-platform, available for Windows and Unix, compatible with
other VNC software;

* well maintained and being actively developed.

also may want to check out:

but i am looking for one that can be run on a client / server network
(or point to point); i thought one was posted here on acf a while back
that was a two part program (client/server); one part of the program
ran on the clients computer (basically created a doorway) while the
other part ran on the server side (key to the doorway). you could use
the server side to send messages and or launch websites or even
applications. this program used tcp/ip (ip address) for the client /
server to talk. It did not install (IIRC).

does anyone know which program i may be talking about? it was
freeware.

Both tightvnc and realvnc work this way -- there is a server part that
you install on the system to be controlled, and a client program that
runs on the system where you view a window that shows the screen of
the server system. (You used the terms backwards from this, if I
understand you correctly). The client part does not need to be
installed, but the server does, and I don't know of any remote control
program where you don't have to install at least the server program,
because it needs to install a service and/or a driver.

UltraVNC at http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net was mentioned here
recently. It works similarly to tightvnc and realvnc, but it also
supports copying files between machines, and other additional
features. All three of these programs are compatible with each other
in the sense that you can use the viewer from any of them to talk to
the server of any of them. You'll get the most responsive remote
control by using UltraVNC at both ends, though. I just switched to it,
and have been quite pleased.

UltraVNC is windows only, and gets the fastest response when running
win2k and winxp on the server system. Tightvnc and realvnc are
cross-platform.

You can now also copy files in the latest
development version of TightVNC.

------
Development Version, 1.3dev3

Development versions include more features but may be unstable, so
they're not intended for production use. Current development version,
1.3dev3 (Win32 only at the moment), features built-in file transfers,
partial desktop sharing on the server side, and a greatly improved
viewer. See this document for more information about new features in
the development versions.
