Steve,

In the XP Pro systems, using Guest authentication, that I have worked on, having
"Everyone" in the allow list is sufficient, as "Guest" is supposed to be a
member of "Everyone". Is this not so on your systems?

I think you're right, Chuck.

Thank you Chuck & Steve. I really appreciate you all sharing your time and
knowledge with me. I have went back through the messages and copied the
commands and tips to save to a file for future reference. I have learned
alot. Thinking back, I really don't understand why the option is in network
setup to not enable file & printer sharing. I think my system is more secure
with it off. I regularly connect outside systems to my router and don't want
anything getting into my system. I want to share my wife's color printer and
files from her scanner so I have to enable file & printer sharing on that
machine right from the start. So besides my own I will be very cautious to
setup any future systems without enabling sharing.

Thank you for the excellent help and support.

You're welcome, Sam.

Your router acts as a firewall, preventing other Internet users from
accessing your computers. Running the Windows Firewall (or a
non-Microsoft firewall program) adds a second layer of protection.
It's safe for you to enable File and Printer Sharing.

Sam, I missed what you said about connecting outside systems to your
router. Since you do that, I can see why you might want to disable
file and printer sharing. How do you protect your wife's computer
from the outsiders?

My solution to that problem is to use three routers to create two
independent, isolated networks. The first router connects to the
cable modem and feeds the second and third routers. I connect my own,
trusted computers to the second router. I connect other, untrusted
computers to the third router. All of the computers have Internet
access, but the untrusted computers can't access my computers (and
vice versa).
